March 25, 2026

After just 19 hours and 30 minutes (the fastest rollout of any Google update), the March 2026 spam update is complete. Google anticipated that this update would take a few days but has completed in record time.
This was a standard spam update that applied to all languages and locations, and was designed to improve Google’s search spam detection systems, which penalise websites violating Google’s spam policies. This includes any tactic used to manipulate the search engine into ranking content highly, such as cloaking, hidden text, scraping, and link spamming.
This was the second Google algorithm update of 2026 and the first spam update of the year. The last spam update was in August 2025.

Tom Johnson replied to Barry Schwartz on X:
As long as you’re not in violation of any of Google’s spam policies, you should be okay. Just bear in mind that rankings may be unstable for a short while, so don’t panic if you notice a drop in traffic and rankings, it may well be temporary.
