How to Set Up Google Tag Manager

Did you know that 41.4% of top marketing sites use Google Tag Manager?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool provided by Google that allows users to install and manage marketing tags (snippets of code that collect data) without the need to directly edit any code.

Why Use GTM?

GTM allows you to integrate certain marketing tools, such as Google Analytics, to gather valuable and accurate data.

Tags can be applied without GTM. However, doing it manually means having to create a new code each time you want to add a new tag. This process is not only slower, but also poses a risk of negatively impacting elements or other tags on your site. By using GTM instead, you can avoid both manual labour and risk of error.

How to Set Up Google Tag Manager

Setting up GTM is incredibly straightforward and only involves a few simple steps. These are:

Step 1: Create an Account

Step 2: Implement the Code

Once you have created your account, you will be shown a popup detailing how to install GTM, which looks like this:

Some content management systems offer plugins or integration options for Google Tag Manager. All you will need to do in this case is add your GTM container ID.

Your ID can be found in your account and will include ‘GTM-’ followed by a series of numbers and letters that are unique to your site.

Check GTM is Working

Once you’re set up, you’ll want to make sure you’ve installed the tag correctly. There are a few ways you can do this.

  1. Look at Your Code

  1. Use GTM’s Preview Feature

  1. Get a Chrome Extension
