All Caps Title Tags Improve Organic Traffic

A recent SEO experiment conducted by SearchPilot found that title tags that are displayed in full capital letters see a 14% increase in organic traffic on mobile devices over non-capitalised titles. However, using all caps makes little to no difference to users on desktop devices.

SearchPilot also ran a poll on LinkedIn and X to investigate whether or not their followers thought capitalisation would make any difference to organic traffic. Despite the experiment reporting that it did have a positive impact on mobile devices, the polls concluded that the majority of followers believed capitalisation would not be beneficial (but it’s worth noting that the sample sizes on the polls were very small).

Are Title Tags Really That Important?

Title tags are pretty important for SEO. A good title tag provides search engines with a basic understanding of what your page is about, so they can match it to relevant search queries - this will give you a better chance of ranking high in the SERPs.

Not only that, but title tags can have a significant influence on click through rates, since a title that grabs a user’s attention is more likely to be clicked on than an uninviting or generic title.

Top Tips for Writing a Good Title Tag

Google has free reign to rewrite your title tag. However, there are things you can do to minimise rewrites and ensure your title tag appears as you intended it to in the SERPs.

  1. Keep tags to 51 - 60 characters - If a title tag is too long it can be cut off or Google may rewrite it to fit. Keep your title tags short and concise and use no more than 60 characters where possible.
  2. Accurately describe the content - A good title tag should give the user a clear idea of what the content on the page is about.
  3. Conduct keyword research - It’s important to include your primary target keyword in the title tag. Be sure to conduct through keyword research so you are targeting the right keywords for your page, and include this in your title.
  4. Don’t overuse keywords - Keyword stuffing can negatively impact your performance in the search results. Stick to using your keyword or key phrase only once.
  5. Use enticing language - It’s not just about SEO. Your title is also the first thing a user will see so you want to make sure it peaks their interest. Reel them in with something interesting that will make them want to click.
